The Lodge rises on the estuary of the Tana river, on an area of 50,000 hectares close to two local tribe communities. The Tana river is the largest Kenyan river which, in its 1,000 km course, has myriads of ramifications: canals and streams that cross thick forests of fig trees and palms. Teeming with aquatic life, these canals may be explored by boat and are ideal spots for observing birds and other animals.

The Delta Dunes private Lodge is situated at a strategic point of departure for exploring the saltwater marshes, mangrove forests, grasslands and freshwater streams which make perfect habitats for a great number of animal species. A real paradise for discovering Nature, for understanding why the fiddler crab plays such a fundamental role in this delicate ecosystem or for hearing the silence being broken by the screech of the fish eagle as it attacks its prey and fishes it out of the water.
This is an oasis of tranquillity for river excursions and bush explorations; 20 infinite kilometres of uninhabited beach in front of the Lodge, which winds its way through majestic dunes with waves breaking as far as the eye can see. The Lodge is a convenient meeting point at sunset, when tired guests get together after an exciting day of nature discovery, to describe their adventures and then go for a relaxing dip in the pool.
To help preserve this wonderfully unique environment, “The Lower Delta Conservation Trust” has been founded, and the Lodge is one of its partners, just as the Trust is a partner of the Lodge. For each night spent at the Lodge, a contribution is made to the Community and to the Trust.
In fact, the Lodge works in close contact with two local communities, the Orma and Pokomo native tribes, whose members help preserve this delicate ecosystem. The Orma are of Ethiopian descent and are herdsmen, while the Pokomo, being farmers and fishermen, look after the mango trees, paddy fields and sugar cane plantations. Their womenfolk produce splendid handcrafted objects using the leaves of palm trees. The Pokomo also guard the Ozi Forest on the main river, which is a sanctuary for elephants, buffaloes and myriads of other animals. Of course, the preservation of this area provides the population with the aid it needs.
The Delta Dunes Lodge is surrounded by river, beach and bush. There are wild animals in the river, in the forest and on the dunes so, when out walking, it is preferable to go along with a guide, except on the beach which is absolutely safe. Our staff is always available to lend assistance, with regards to any type of activity, and in the evening there are 2 “Askaris”, night-time guardians, who are available to accompany guests.
The Lodge kitchen offers exquisite food, almost always dishes whose prime ingredient is the freshest of fish, brought in directly be local fishermen and cooked on the spot.
The Lodge extends over two floors. On the lower floor, at the guests’ disposal, there is a delightful little boutique, a reception and a massage centre while, on the upper level, on top of the sand dunes, there is a restaurant, a bar and a lounge sheltered under an open-air pergola with a fantastic all round view.
Also for the guests’ amusement, there are kayaks, 2 sand yachts, 3 motorboats, surfboards for use on sand and water. It is possible to go on safaris at dawn to encounter buffaloes and elephants, go bird-watching or trekking on the dunes, take nature walks and botanic excursions inside the Lodge.
